The huge rocket went up into the sky. There were three American astronauts in it. They were very excited. The moon was 400,000 km away and the journey took three days.
Two astronauts went down onto the moon. Neil Armstrong was the first man to stand on the moon on 21
st July, 1969. The two men stayed on the moon for about 21 hours. They collected soil and rocks. Then they went back to the rocket and travelled back to the Earth.
They were the first men to go to the moon!

But eight years before that flight the first man went into space.   Who was he?
